Enhancing livelihoods of climate vulnerable communities adjacent to Bardia National Park through fruit tree plantation
With support from Nelumbo e.V., Ujyalo Nepal implemented a project to enhance the livelihoods of climate-vulnerable communities living near Bardia National Park, where people face risks from floods, climate change, and human-wildlife conflict.
Hattisar Shivpur area, located in the buffer zone residing adjacent to Bardia National Park, are vulnerable to both climate change and wildlife interactions, facing livelihood insecurities and environmental degradation. On the one hand, the life here is affected by wild animals and on the other hand, it is also affected by floods and inundation during the rainy season. Fruit tree plantation was identified as a sustainable intervention to address these issues, offering economic resilience and ecological benefits. Awareness training was provided to four different community of Hattisar Shivpur area which is connected to Bardia National Park on how to adapt climate change and its possible benefits. This village has been affected by floods and wildlife. As in this training, the participants from four communities that are Bandhawara, Banugaun, Khauraha and Bichtole were participated. Training was conducted on the scale of climate change, and the fact that it will affect many areas of life, adaptation also needs to take place on greater scale.
Training and providing fruit plants to the local residents of Hattisar Shivpur area is a commendable initiative aimed at raising their standard of living through fruit cultivation. It is believed that, the commencement of fruit production typically corresponds with an increase in income for farmers and communities engaged in fruit cultivation. The community is enthusiastic about planting fruit trees; this initiative brings numerous benefits to the village. Planting fruits also enhance its resilience, food security and economic opportunities. We started this project targeting 243 high risk houses of 4 villages which are residing adjacent to Bardia National Park. But as the rest of the houses were also pressured to participate in this project, in coordination with the local government, other houses were also added and a total of 281 households were involved. Apart from this, 2 branch offices of Bardia National Park also planted fruit trees. As a result, a total of 283 households have participated in the tree planting project.
