Nepal’s success in biodiversity conservation has increased wildlife populations, but it has also intensified human-wildlife conflict (HWC), causing losses of crops, livestock, property, and livelihoods. To address these risks beyond traditional compensation systems, Ujyalo Nepal has been promoting wildlife risk insurance since 2020 in communities around the Khata Biological Corridor and other conflict-prone areas. With support from UNDP/BIOFIN, Ujyalo Nepal conducted a national study that identified gaps in the existing compensation system and proposed a Human-Wildlife Coexistence Insurance Scheme. This work contributed to the development of Nepal’s Wildlife Risk-Focused Insurance Scheme by the Nepal Insurance Authority. Building on this achievement, Ujyalo Nepal has launched a pilot Wildlife Risk-Focused Insurance Programme in Mechinagar Municipality, Jhapa. The programme aims to protect vulnerable households from wildlife-related losses, strengthen community resilience, promote preventive and conservation-friendly practices, and provide lessons for expanding wildlife insurance across Nepal.
