Livelihoods Improved

The Partnership for Smallholder Farmers and Youth Entrepreneurship based on Agriculture and Livestock Development Program in Thakurbaba is designed to empower rural communities by enhancing agricultural productivity, improving livestock management, and fostering youth-led agribusiness ventures. Through strategic partnerships, skills development, and sustainable practices, the program aims to boost income opportunities, strengthen food security, and inspire the next generation of agri-entrepreneurs.

Background

Thakurbaba Municipality, with its rich agricultural potential, is home to many smallholder farmers who depend on traditional farming and livestock rearing for their livelihoods. However, limited access to modern techniques, market opportunities, and entrepreneurial training has restricted the community’s growth. Youth migration to cities and abroad for employment is also rising, leading to a decline in agricultural engagement.

Objectives

  1. Increase agricultural productivity through the adoption of improved farming techniques and climate-resilient practices.
  2. Enhance livestock development by introducing better breeds, veterinary services, and feed management systems.
  3. Promote youth entrepreneurship in agriculture and livestock-based value chains.
  4. Strengthen market linkages to ensure fair prices and stable demand for local produce.
  5. Encourage sustainable practices to protect soil, water, and biodiversity.

Key Activities

  • Capacity Building Workshops: Training farmers and youth on modern agriculture, livestock management, and agribusiness skills.
  • Resource Support: Distribution of improved seeds, livestock breeds, and farming equipment.
  • Demonstration Farms: Setting up model farms to showcase best practices in crop cultivation and livestock care.
  • Entrepreneurship Incubation: Mentoring youth to develop business plans, access microfinance, and start agri-based ventures.
  • Market Development: Facilitating partnerships with cooperatives, buyers, and value chain actors to improve product reach.
  • Sustainability Integration: Promoting organic farming, water conservation, and waste-to-compost systems.

Expected Outcomes

  • Increased crop yield and livestock productivity among participating households.
  • Creation of sustainable youth-led agribusinesses in the community.
  • Strengthened market access, leading to higher and more stable incomes.
  • Reduced migration of youth by creating attractive local employment opportunities.
  • Enhanced community awareness and adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices.

Beneficiaries

  • Primary: Smallholder farmers and rural youth (ages 18–35) in Thakurbaba Municipality.
  • Secondary: Local cooperatives, women’s groups, and other value chain actors.

Partnerships

This initiative is implemented in collaboration with local government bodies, agricultural cooperatives, and development partners. Technical expertise is provided by agricultural extension offices, veterinary specialists, and market linkage facilitators.

Sustainability Strategy

The project emphasizes skills transfer, local ownership, and self-sustaining business models to ensure that outcomes continue beyond the project’s lifetime. Community groups and cooperatives will be strengthened to lead future agricultural and livestock development activities independently.
